So I bring it to the dealership that I purchased from, the service technicians hear the clanking noise. Goes in for warranty, tech tears the rear and apart finds nothing wrong and puts it back together . now says I might have to pay for the diagnosis. Why would I have to pay for diagnosis for something they can't find that they definitely heard? Anybody else have this issue with clunking in their rear and while and 4 wheel drive ? So frustrated. Been without it for weeks so far.

I have noticed the same thing on my 2020 Talon X. When I first brought it home, I was testing the hill hold feature. When I stepped on the gas there was a loud clunk as soon as it started forward. At first, I thought it might have something to do with the hill hold releasing. I tried to simulate it again, but it did not do it. I never hear it again until yesterday. I started it cold put it in forward and as soon as it started forward there was this loud clunk again. This Talon has less than 10 miles on it never been on a trail yet. It sounded to me like the transmission was in the wrong gear and as soon as I started forward it had to down shift. But this was not the normal shift click this was a loud very noticeable Clunk. The sound makes me nervous. I called my dealer and talked to tech support. They checked the Honda web site and there was nothing mentioned. If anyone else experiences this or knows what it is please let me know.

I have a 2019 talon x... I have the same loud clanking noise in my rear axle passenger side...since reading the thread and reflecting on the moments I've heard the noise I realize I was setting on a steep grade and takin off when heard the sound.. And the hill hold assist makes sense... I'll continue to monitor and update please do the same

I have noticed the problem when using the hill hold assist only once or twice. Most of the time it is when I just started up and started moving either forward or reverse. But it is still very rare. I have had my Talon about 7 months now and it only happened about 6 times. My dealer continues to monitor for any official reports from Honda. My guess if something is not in the proper gear position and the clunk is the sound of popping it back into the correct position when I start out. Hopefully it is not serious.

So I have this clunking in which sounds like the right rear end of my talon x. I take it to a local dealer and they wanna to put two new cv axels on it and aren’t sure if that will fix it for a little under a grand. So I opt out and bring kit home and replace the cv axels in the rear and the radius arms. Got all this done and still have the clunk sound coming form the back of my machine. Can anyone give me some solid advice to what the hell is causing this noise. Ty.

Have someone walk next to the ride and do some figure eights and see if they can see a problem with shafts, hubs … just to narrow it down a bit. I suspect something in the rear differential, hubs, drive shaft == and you replaced the axles so they are not the problem. Sorry, wish you could pull it in my garage for a bit -- wish I could be of more help!

I have the same issue with my X 2400 miles,,,, I hear it when I start to move and turning as I move. Just a metalic clunk and it never does it when I move straight foward,,, that indicates a cv joint doing something right or wrong IDK.

I replaced mine and the problem still exists I’m thinking it’s the rear diff.

I took mine to a tech and they said the same, they don't know what it is but if they tear into it I have to pay. I don't have a clunk but a vibration instead, only on pavement, put it in 4wheel and it goes away until you start turning while in that mode. I told them I will run it until it blows then you will see it had a problem. lol

First of all check fluid level in differential.
Have someone walk next to the rear and listen as you turn left and right slowly.
Try to isolate to left or right. Look at axel boot for any signs of wearing or holes.
Look at rear end casing very close for any sighs of cracking.
Jack rear end, use jack stands and stethoscope, rotate rear wheels by hand and listen to rear end housing and notice play in differential.

Once you isolate the problem replace or repair. Of course if you are under warranty, don't do any of this take it to the dealer! If it is an axes, I would recommend replacing it with a SuperATV Rhino 2.0, as they are much beefier than OEM. Of course you can keep running until the problem becomes worse, just be aware of how far you are from help and or your camp!

Good luck and sorry about the problem, hope it is an easy fix! :)

The common misconception with a DCT is that the RPM change that feels like an automatic shifting is not the entire "shift" sequence but rather only the last part of it at the point when the transmission changes from one clutch to the other. The "Click" (I actually describe it as a "Clunk") you are all hearing is actually the transmission shifting the next or previous gear just prior to disengaging the engaged clutch and engaging the disengaged clutch. That click/clunk is the actual gear shifting. It is how a DCT works, the shift occurs something like this...

  • Gear section 1,3,5 in 1st gear.
  • Clutch 1 engaged, clutch 2 disengaged.
  • Shift requested (either by computer or paddles).
  • Gear section 2,4,6 shifts into 2nd (this is the click/clunk that you hear like large bike when you shift it while pulling the clutch).
  • Clutch 1 disengages and (almost simultaneously) clutch 2 engages (this is when the RPM changes and you feel the finishing step of a shift).
The click/clunk is totally normal and part of most all DCT's. It seems a bit louder in the Talon than a car but that is probably due to the smaller gearbox and lack of insulation so you hear just about everything going on back there.
