I just couldn't get on board with cutting the dash up or mounting the radios in the glove box. Unfortunately no one makes an overhead mount for them either. So I decided I would go ahead and design and build my own out of steel mount tabs and a 16ga aluminum tray. Radios are enclosed and theft resistant (you have to drop the entire console to remove them for access to bolts). Should stay nice and cool as well with airflow from the windshield pushing over their rear open portion on the mounts. Overall really happy with the way it has turned out. And added a little storage for small items (gloves/goggles/etc) while out on a ride.
I went down the same road with aluminum roof and windshield - measured, cut, bent and made my own patterns and eventual aluminum stuff - not a single hole drilled in the machine for the switches and accessories. Saved a ton on the windshield alone. Just paid a glass shop for a piece of auto glass. I mounted the switches up high on the roll bar as well.
