Hi everyone! I just pulled the trigger on a blue 2019 Talon X that hopefully will be delivered next week.
Several years ago I had a RZR 900 XP, sold that some years back and bought a 2018 RZR 900 EPS Trail for use on the tight forest trails around the Pacific Northwest! We love the little Trail and have it all fixed up for riding anywhere including multi day rides cross country.
The problem with the 50” 900 Trail is my ego took a hit every time we road with other SXS riders in their XP 1000s, RX3 CanAms, and Turbo Ss!! So, I just had to buy a bigger SXS for those times when size matters!!
I looked long and hard at all the options available. My toy hauler and 6x10 Alumaweld open trailer, as well as the abundance of narrow trails, eliminated the 72” machine options. I’m 61 years old and have always been a piston head speed freak, but decided the majority of my riding has no need for 200 hp, so as hard as it was, I decided the 100-110 hp naturally aspirated machines would provide all the power I’d ever really need, even for the occasional trip to the Oregon coast dunes.
That pretty much brought it down to the Talon X, the RZR XP, Tektron XX and the CanAm maverick. I’ve not heard a lot good about the Tektron (Wildcat) especially in reliability, so that was out. Not a fan of the Maverick styling, so its out. I’ve had great luck with the two RSRs, and have to admit the new Pro XP was tugging hard on my heart strings, but sticking to my resolve to avoid spending a bunch of money on a 181 hp machine that I don’t need, I started looking for a good deal on a basic 1000 XP.
When the Talon was released I was immediately intrigued! Even though I’ve never had an issue with a CVT belt or clutch, the idea of a smooth engaging gear on gear DCT transmission that can never smoke a belt 50 miles up on a mountain somewhere was very appealing! Top that off with typical Honda engineering, fit and finish, and expected reliability, and I had to look hard at the Talon!
I kept going back to the RZR, and, had the top end PRO XP not been $28,000, I may have succumbed to the hp allure, but the Honda just kept making more and more sense! The advantages of the Talon just won me over, in spite of the small, offset and hard to see instrument display!
So, I have a new Talon heading this way from Phoenix AZ and I can’t wait to get it here and put it to the test! I plan to hang on to the little 900 Trail, mainly because I’d lose a bunch of money if I sold it, but it will still be the choice for any 50” trails we May decide to ride, or when we need to load up the roof rack for a multi day trail ride, but it will be nice to hold my head up again with the big machine guys knowing the Talon is available to tow them and their broken belts down off the mountain should the need arise. Cheers! ?
