So after most of 2 years with the Talon and about $10k in making it mostly what I wanted it to be, I decided to let the Talon X go to a new owner.
I really had a love hate relationship with the Talon, but unfortunately mama had more of a tolerate/hate relationship.
The things I loved was the perceived reliability, not having to give a second thought to a belt, driving something different than the sea of RZRs and CanAms, and the better build quality than most.
The things I hated were the suspension (prior to Shock Therapy), the horrible nearly unreadable (for my old eyes) instrument panel, the overly touchy throttle, the howling transmission/engine noise, the access to the air filter and poorly designed air intake the constant and abrupt shifting in mountain trail conditions.
Mama had serious issue with the screaming trans/engine noise (negated mostly by a $1500 Radio/intercom system with headsets), the hard ride (prior to ST), and she really tired of the abrupt shifting snapping her head back and forth constantly on the mountain trails.
I really wanted to love the machine and spent a bunch of time and money trying to get to that point, but the first few rides this season just reinforced our frustration.
The Talon is a great machine, and for the right kind of riding terrain is well suited, but it just isn’t really great for the tight, rough, and slow mountain trails we typically ride.
We decided to go back to a RZR XP 1000 and purchased a new Trails and Rocks Edition. We’ve had 2 RZRs before and never had a problem with either. We don’t really ride aggressively so belts really aren’t much of a concern for us.
I hope you all use and enjoy your Talons to the fullest, and above all stay safe during your adventures!
