So, last week was my maiden voyage. My machine backfired a few times. I get running lean to meet CA emissions. Is this normal? I was running fresh 91 octane gas. Weather was 60+ degrees. Hmm.. again, if only happened a few times, ...
Hi Big had, a call to your local Honda dealer will not hurt and if under warranty a the best way to resolve the issue. In addition; pulling the plugs and looking at the ceramic isolator for any damage coupled with the color is a good indicator as well. I have a programmer and if I change the tunes it takes a few minutes to stabilize and occasionally will backfire. phm14 is definitely on the right track as any modifications especially performance exhaust, changes to intake or addition of a programmer will make a huge difference. Please update us on any mods and if the backfiring is persistent.
Good point, BD. If it's replicatable, and you haven't altered fueling (even with an exhaust), have the dealer look at it. If not replicatable, you may call Honda, and have them file a CS case, for the record. Either way, you have documentation of a issue for future reference. If Honda recommends dealer inspection, follow through, else the report could go against you in a future warranty claim.
Thanks for the replies. My ride was brand new and not messed with. The backfire only occurred at start up. It was a mild backfire but nonetheless, a backfire. It happened about 4 times over a weeks usage.
